Sleep and rest are as important to a good nights rest to our souls and spirituality as much as prayer. While there is never a substitute for open communication and prayer to the Creator, healthy is just as important. The Bible says that the “body is a temple” (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). Since all scripture is inspired of God (2 Timothy 3:16) then we should treat our bodies as such. This doesn’t just mean to avoid over indulgence of alcohol or to avoid drugs and other poisons to our body but to also maintain the body as the sharp instrument that God gave us to house our spirits.
Many people think that the noise that is produced when we snore comes from the nose but in fact this is not the case. Snoring occurs when the muscles that would normally keep the airway open relax causing air flow to become restricted. This causes turbulence and the soft tissue at the back of the throat can start to vibrate and it is this that causes the snoring sound.
As many as 50% of adults snore and this can sometimes cause real problems in relationships if the snoring is persistent. People turn to anti snoring aids to try and stop snoring so that themselves and their partners can get a good nights sleep. An anti snoring mouthpiece is one such device and it can be very effective.
These mouthpieces are worn at night and extend the bottom jaw forward slightly. This will not cause any discomfort to the person that is wearing the mouthpiece. They are completely safe to use and can be worn night after night. Keeping the jaw in this position means that the airway is kept open and so there are less vibrations of the tissue in the throat. This helps to reduce snoring and in some cases may stop it altogether. These mouthpieces can be purchased in most health stores. Some people choose to have them made by their dentist to perfectly fit the shape of their mouths but this is obviously a lot more expensive than buying a standard product that will fit all.
There are also some other small changes that you can make to reduce your snoring. Snoring is often worse after you have had a drink so avoid drinking alcohol just before bed. Sleeping on your side rather than your back can also help. If you are overweight then you may find that you snore more often and this will be reduced if you lose some weight. While taking this advice into account may help with your snoring you will probably find that it is only when you use a mouthpiece that you will notice a real difference.
